1. What do I need to do to get a Driver’s License in NYS?

Pass written Permit exam at DMV (cost $89.00)
Take the 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Class (Given every Wed @ 5:30PM)
Take Driving lessons (most students take 15-20 lessons with a driving school)
Book a Road Test Appointment.
Pass the Road Test Exam.

2. What do I need to book a road test appointment?

You will need to have BOTH your NYS permit ID # and your 5 Hour Class (Pre-Licensing Course Certificate) # to book a road test appointment.

3. How long does it take until my road test appointment date?

The usual time frame is 5-6 weeks from the date you booked the appointment.
However for the fee of $30 we can book you a FAST ROAD TEST appointment within 2-3 weeks.

4. How many lessons should I take before attempting to pass the road test?

The DMV recommends all new drivers practice 50 hours behind the wheel before attempting a road test. Most students will take 15 to 20 hours with a driving school and the rest with a family member or friend outside of the school.

5. How soon after I pass the road test will it take to receive my driver’s license?

If you pass your road test you will be issued a temporary license at the road test site that day which is good for 90 days. In the meantime DMV will send you your permanent pictured license in the mail within 2-3 weeks.

6. What happens if I fail my road test?

No worries if you failed your road test, just practice a little more driving and book another road test appointment. Remember it will take 5-6 weeks from the time you book your appointment to the time you actually take your 2nd road test.

8. Does the DMV provide the vehicle for the day of the road test?

No, each student must provide both a vehicle and a licensed driver to take them to the road test.

9. What do I do if I know how to drive, or had a license before, and I just want to go on a road test?

10. Can I transfer my license from another country to a New York State driver’s license?

No, the United States does not honor licenses from other countries.
